The masters of supernatural mysteries in vastly intertwining worlds have revived one of their most beloved series in a new spinoff. Introducing CLAMP’s xxxHOLiC: Rei.
Watanuki is back with Yūko in her magical shop, helping grant the wishes of customers destined to find their way there. Dōmeki is there too, as annoying to Watanuki’s as ever, and Himawari is still sweet and encouraging. Things are as they always were and yet, something is off. Watanuki knows things he has no memory of, and he keeps receiving mysterious phone calls. What is going on? Things are just as they’ve always been, aren’t they?
Fans of the original xxxHOLiC will feel right at home with this new spinoff. The “Rei” part of the title means “return,” and that’s exactly what it feels like. The art is as striking and intriguing as always. Longtime fans might expect to know what’s happening right away, but don’t be so sure. The writers of CLAMP have given us plenty of mystery to start off this new journey; no boring sequels here! And be sure to check out and enjoy the translation notes at the end of each volume, complete with pictures next to each entry so you don’t have to flip back through the pages. Everything CLAMP fans love is all right here, just as it should be, in these first three volumes: light comedy, amazing supernatural beings and phenomena, and an ever-unfolding and intricate story that gets more fascinating with each turn of the page.
xxxHOLiC! is one of the best supernatural manga series around. If you haven’t read the original, you’ve got some catching up to do. There’s a lot you need to know before you start on this story. And if you really want to go all out, check out CLAMP’s Tsubasa series, too. Each story stands fine on their own, but seeing how and why they intertwine makes it all the more amazing. xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa are available from Kodansha, as are volumes 1-3 of xxxHOLiC: Rei. Volume 4 will be released on August 15th. CLAMP is quintessential for manga readers. New fans: immerse yourself into the world of xxxHOLiC. You’re destined to love it. And to returning fans: welcome back.
